Holi is a festival of vibrant colors that well defines the spring-season in which its celebrated. It is quite popular for adulterated fun and vociferousness throughout the world. This boisterous, fun filled Hindu festival also glorifies the joy of spring in the form of good fertility of the land as well as harvest. In a country where people belonging to different faith, caste and race live together, there the significance of this festival is even more. However, the celebration finds its origin from the Hindu mythology. The two day festival consisting of burning Holika that is arranging for a massive bonfire and the "love play" of Radha and Krishna. The first custom is taken from the famous Prahlad event where this great disciple of Lord Vishnu was thrown in fire as punishment for not worshiping King Hiranyakashipu along with Holika (king's sister) who had special wish of staying unharmed when walking alone through it. Prahlad's deep faith and devotion in Lord Vishnu ultimately saved his life.

The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated as one can renew the social relations. On this day people wishes the friends by hugging each other and say 'Happy Holi' or 'Holi Mubarak'. Holi is celebrated in various states with the different names and people from the different states also follows different tradition in celebrating the festival. There are number of legends that are connected to the celebrations of Holi.

The celebration of Holi is very ancient in its origin. And by its very origin, it celebrates an ultimate triumph of the 'good' over the 'evil'. While, a feast of colors associated with the Holi, is the face of this celebration, the original reason of celebrating Holi, lies in its soul. And this gives us the 'why' of this ancient festival.

Literally "Holi" signifies "burning" in Indian language. But, how it came to be associated with 'burning', is a story. The reference is found only in ancient Indian mythology. And It is the legend of Hiranyakashipu, to whom the celebration of Holi is associated.
